Culturally speaking many people have asked me to pick a side as if I were also able to pick my genetics. I am as mixed as a Jamba-juice smoothie but for some reason society expects me to label myself as one ingredient or the other, one race or the other. Is a strawberry-banana smoothie classified as a strawberry smoothie, or a banana smoothie? Is it both or is it neither? Is a Cuban/Filipino person a Latin person or an Asian person? Are they considered dark or are they light? Are they both or are they neither? Why are we forced to pick one race to identify with if we are genetically multiracial? It’s a shame that some people can’t understand why some of us want to learn how to identify with our multiple cultures instead of only identifying with one. I want to learn how to love every culture that I come from so I can better love myself & others.
A downside of being mixed is that it can be difficult settling into any one culture. But one of the blessings is that you have a unique opportunity to become a bridge towards a beautiful coexistence.
